Painting is Never Boring

Chen Lei

Without a doubt, painting should be an art of contemplation. Artists delve into deeper layers through constant self-reflection and self-denial. There is no safe zone; the ordinary ground is the summit...

Painting is both a profession and a way of life. Life may seem lively, but in reality, it can be quite dull. For me, painting is a means to combat boredom, not only providing a sense of existence but also allowing me to experience spiritual freedom. Painting is not an escape; it is closely tied to our state of being, a form of connection and participation. It is not a clear-cut slogan but rather an ambiguous and secretive expression. An authentic painting is not merely decoration; it is the perception of multiple layers of information.

In this bizarre, ever-changing, and turbulent world, seeking a sense of an eternal and calm through painting, gaining insights into existence, is the very meaning of painting.

Painting is not an Olympic competition, not about who can paint more precisely or skillfully. Hard practice is not important; an open mind is. Technique is not important; attitude is. Each person is unique in the universe, and this is the foundation of artistic confidence. By fully opening oneself, one can see the entire world in a grain of sand.

Painting is a form of concentration, a thoughtful speculation. One must believe that painting contains its own cosmic truth, and every brushstroke points toward it. Only then can one avoid stagnation and find the motivation to transcend oneself. I paint what I want to see, what I find interesting, even if it seems fantastical. What I focus on remains people and the consciousness of life.

The act of painting compels artists to mobilize all their perceptions, to uncover visual images from the subconscious, personal life experiences, books and movies, music they've heard, to contemplate, to meditate ...... After precipitation, these elements are transformed into a personalized surreal scene. The process of painting is a journey of self-awareness.

Dreams and reality, humans and nature, humans and the universe, revisiting the past to re-witness history, multidimensional time and space, inner conflicts... Deconstructing and combining these elements, finding a balance of tension and harmony, and dramatically expressing the complexity of human existence...

Painting is never boring.
